The Kandariya Mahadeva

The most significant temple of Khajuraho decorated with intricacy is a bountiful expression of sculptures of ancient Indian art. Build during 1025-1050 it is 30.5m-long and has 84 towers making it the largest temple representing Chandela architecture. It has 872 statues of nearly 1m high. The temple is enhanced with verbose sculpting and 646 figures. The temple spire is around 31m-high with a phallic Shiva symbol depicting Mount Kailasha. Lakshmana Temple

Devi Jagdamba Temple

It is a group of 25 temples this temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Parvati, and Kali. Dated back to the 10th century it was built by Chandella dynasty rulers. The most exquisite temple has statues of divine nymphs, mythical beasts, pairs of men and women and numerous erotic carvings. The striking feature is in the center with an enormous image of goddess Parvati with Mithuna (Gemini) displaying amorous couple. Temple symbolizes trinity and has three bands: first presents the scriptures of the creator: Brahma, second the destroyer: Lord Shiva and third the sustainer: Lord Vishnu.


Chaturbhuj Temple

It’s a small temple built during 1100AD. It has a delicate 9foot high statue of Vishnu. It is Khajuraho’s only temple that has no erotic sculptures. It is called Chaturbhuj as it embellishes itself with four armed statues of lord Vishnu which is carved in a single stone. The idol is the ultimate beauty to behold. Though it lacks erotic carvings, the other carvings are beautified enough to differentiate it from the rest of its kind.


Parsvanath Temple

An epitome of 10th-century work, it is built during the reign of Chandela king. The sanctum has an entrance has a magic square with the inscriptions; its exterior walls highlight Vaishnavaite themes, the ceiling features floral patterns and chains. It is the largest Jain temple in Khajuraho. The outer walls exhibits three bands of sculptures presenting carvings of celestial beings, flying couples, musicians, dancers and much more.


Nandi Temple

One of the most beautiful temples in the city is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is. The architecture of the temple display stone images of a seated Nandi facing Shiva. The elaborate structured temple has an erotic sculpture of couples, elephant carvings, human figures and the statue of Lord Shiva. It is dedicated to the savari (vehicle) of Lord Shiva, i.e., Nandi bull.
